Buying your first home in Ramsey
Ramsey offers first-time buyers more space than many closer-in suburbs. I'm Lesley, a REALTOR® with Bridge Realty, and we help you weigh space against the drive.
Is Ramsey a good place to buy a first home? It can be, if the commute works for you. Minneapolis is about 22 miles away by Highway 10, and the commuter train station closed in early 2026. In return, you will find townhomes near The COR and houses on larger lots.
Ask Me Your First Question
Two paths for a first-time buyer
- A townhome near The COR. Newer, lower upkeep, and close to shops and The Draw park. Add the association dues to your monthly budget.
- A house on a larger lot. More room, and possibly a private well and septic system. We test both before you buy, and you plan for their upkeep.
Before you choose, drive your commute at the hour you would leave for work. It is easy to underestimate.
What it costs, and the help available
Plan for four costs: earnest money with your offer, the inspection, your down payment, and closing costs. Down payments are often far less than 20 percent, and Minnesota Housing and local programs help eligible buyers with down payment and closing costs. If your credit needs work, a lender can give you a plan. Our first-time buyer page explains each cost, and getting ready covers pre-approval. We also work in Brooklyn Park, closer to Minneapolis.
