How Woodbury grew, and what that means for buyers
Woodbury was farmland for most of its history. Its first suburban neighborhood, Woodbury Heights, began in 1955, and Woodbury became a village in 1967. The city has been growing ever since, which is why its homes span several decades of styles.
- Older neighborhoods, starting with Woodbury Heights, where homes date to the 1950s and 1960s.
- Later subdivisions, with two-story homes, townhomes, and association-maintained communities built as the city expanded.
- New construction, which is still under way. If you tour a model home, bring us with you from the first visit, because the sales consultant represents the builder.
One detail surprises many buyers. Woodbury kept most of its lakeshore public: about 90 percent of it is trails and parkland, not private lots. That means nearly everyone can walk to the water, and it also means true lakefront homes are rare here.
Lakes, parks, and trails
- Carver Lake Park. 150 acres of woods and bluffs around a deep lake, with a swimming beach, an archery range, and off-road cycling trails.
- Tamarack Nature Preserve. Two miles of flat trails through wetland, used for walking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter.
- Ojibway Park. Athletic fields, an outdoor rink, sand volleyball, and a skate park.
- Eagle Valley Golf Course. The city's public course.
- The lakes. Powers, Wilmes, Colby, Carver, and Battle Creek, most of them ringed by public trail.
For daily errands, Woodbury has three major shopping areas: Tamarack Village, Woodbury Village, and Woodbury Lakes.
Commute and schools
The commute. Interstate 94 forms Woodbury's northern boundary and leads west to St. Paul and Minneapolis. Interstate 494 runs along the west side and connects south toward the airport and Bloomington. Where a home sits in the city makes a real difference in how quickly you reach either one, so we look at your daily drive before you choose a neighborhood.
Schools. Three school districts serve different parts of Woodbury, and South Washington County Schools covers most of the city. Woodbury High School, East Ridge High School, Lake Middle School, and Woodbury Middle School are located in Woodbury. Boundaries vary by address and can change, so confirm the schools for any specific home with the district.
