Living in Minnetonka

Minnetonka is a city of about 53,800 people in Hennepin County, about 10 miles west of Minneapolis. Its name comes from the Dakota words for "big water."

I'm Lesley, a REALTOR® with Bridge Realty, and we help buyers and sellers in Minnetonka and across Minnesota.

What is Minnetonka, MN like? It is a wooded suburb built around creeks, wetlands, and hills. The city has 49 parks and more than 100 miles of trails, many of them following its three creek corridors: Minnehaha, Nine Mile, and Purgatory.

The city and the lake are not the same thing

This is the first thing we explain to buyers. Lake Minnetonka is a large lake surrounded by many separate cities. The city of Minnetonka includes only the lake's eastern tip. If you want a home on the lake itself, we will likely look in several lake communities, not only here.

What Minnetonka offers is different: neighborhoods set among trees and wetlands, on lots that follow the land instead of a strict grid. The city incorporated in 1956, and its homes range from mid-century houses to recent construction.

  • On a wooded or sloped lot, we look at drainage, trees near the house, and the driveway in winter.
  • Near wetlands or a creek, we check what you may and may not build or clear.
  • In a townhome or condominium, we review the association before you make an offer.

Parks, trails, and creeks

  • Purgatory Park. At 155 acres, the largest of the city's five community parks, with a 1.2-mile loop through wetland, woods, and prairie.
  • Lone Lake Park. 146 acres with lake views, hiking trails, and a separate five-mile mountain bike trail.
  • Big Willow Park. 95 acres along Minnehaha Creek, with athletic fields and a 2.3-mile trail loop.

Commute, employers, and schools

The commute. Interstate 394 leads east to downtown Minneapolis, Interstate 494 runs north and south through the city, and Highway 169 runs along the east side.

Employers. UnitedHealth Group and Carlson are based in Minnetonka, and Cargill's headquarters is in the Minnetonka and Wayzata area, so many buyers here are relocating for work. Our relocation page explains how to buy from a distance.

Schools. Three districts serve different parts of the city: Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Wayzata. The district depends on the address, so confirm it for any specific home.
