What is Bloomington, MN like? It is a large, fully built city with a river valley along its southern edge, 97 parks and green spaces, and more than 50 miles of trails. It is also next to the airport and home to the Mall of America, which opened in 1992.

East Bloomington and West Bloomington

Interstate 35W divides the city, and the two sides feel different.

  • West Bloomington is mostly residential, with neighborhoods near Hyland Lake Park Reserve, Bush Lake, and Normandale Lake.
  • East Bloomington has more business, industry, and retail, including the Mall of America, along with residential neighborhoods and the closest access to the airport and light rail.

Bloomington became a city in 1960 and is largely built out, so most homes for sale are existing homes instead of new construction. With an existing home, we look closely at the roof, windows, furnace, electrical, and any updates, because those shape what the home will cost you after you move in.

If a home is near the airport, we visit at different times of day so you can hear the flight paths for yourself.

Parks and the river valley

  • Hyland Lake Park Reserve. A large regional park in west Bloomington with trails, a nature center, and a ski area.
  • Bush Lake. Parks on both shores, with a swimming beach.
  • Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Trails and wildlife viewing along the Minnesota River.
  • Normandale Lake. A lake with a walking path, near the Normandale Lake business district.

Commute and schools

The commute. Interstate 494 runs across the north side of the city and Interstate 35W runs north to Minneapolis. Highway 77, Highway 100, and Highway 169 all pass through as well. The Blue Line light rail connects the Mall of America to the airport and downtown Minneapolis.

Schools. Bloomington Public Schools serves the city, with Kennedy High School on the east side and Jefferson High School on the west side. Confirm the schools for any specific address with the district.
